"We went and saw two bodies lying on the road. A woman and a man. Their faces were completely disfigured. The man fell under the front wheel of the truck. The rear wheel of the truck went through the left side of the pregnant woman's body. The baby came out with the stomach burst under the pressure of the wheel.
"One or two road accidents happen in Trishal every day but I have never seen such a terrible incident in my working life. It is like a miracle. We later put the bodies in two body bags and hand them over to the police."
Before the rescuers arrived, people near the spot took the newborn and six-year-old girl to the nearby Upazila Health Complex.
Doctors there declared the six-year-old child dead. The police came and took the two bodies lying on the road to the police station.
Trishal police station officer in charge Main Uddin said quoting eyewitnesses, "After the accident, when people came near, they saw three bodies lying there. They could also hear the cries of a newborn baby. But in the commotion, they could not understand where the cries were coming from. Seeing that the woman had a baby under her veil. No one immediately understood that the baby had burst open."
He said the bodies of the three were handed over to the families without post-mortem as the three died on the spot and the accident happened in front of many witnesses.
Sharif Uddin, the cousin of deceased Jahangir Alam, said that the burial of the dead was completed on Saturday night.
How is the newborn baby?
Officer-in-charge of Trishal police station said that a woman present at the accident site wrapped the child in a cloth and helped to give first aid.
After she was first taken to the local health complex, it was found that the newborn baby was also injured. Sharif Uddin said that the child was later taken to private Labib Hospital in Mymensingh Sadar.
The hospital's pediatrician Dr. Kamruzzaman said, "The thick bone above the elbow of the newborn child is fractured. His collar bone is broken. The fractured area is bandaged. But we did not find any internal injuries.
"The weight of the baby is a little more than three kg. He is healthy mashallah. But the way people including journalists are crowding, we are a little worried about whether the newborn will get an infection."
Deceased Jahangir Alam and Ratna Begum have two other children under 10 years of age. Distraught by the whole incident, the two children came to visit their little sister in the hospital.
Now the child is being looked after by the wife of the owner of the hospital and some nurses working there. Moreover, some obstetricians who gave birth in the hospital are feeding the baby by dividing the breast milk, said Dr. Kamruzzaman.
The child has not been named yet due to the death of the parents. Sharif Uddin said, "We couldn't even think of that. My brother was a professional car driver once. He quit driving after seeing accidents happen regularly in Trishal area. We can't even imagine them dying like this."
Now the matter has been raised in a bench of the High Court on Sunday as to who will take responsibility of the child.
